Full-frame or insert replacement?

The condition of the opening should decide the method.

Concept illustration for Full-frame or insert replacement?
Planning illustration; the actual system and wall detail must be assessed onsite.
01

Two different scopes

An insert fits a new unit into a retained frame. Full-frame replacement removes the existing frame so the opening and its connections can be assessed. These are not interchangeable ways to price the same job. An insert can preserve useful finishes when the retained assembly is sound; it also adds frame material within the opening and may change the visible glass or clear opening.

02

Start with what stays

Ask the surveyor to identify every retained component: sill, jambs, casing, exterior trim and any existing drainage detail. Photograph staining, soft wood or repeated leak locations before the inspection. A neat-looking interior does not demonstrate that the concealed part of the opening is sound. Where the condition is uncertain, agree on how it will be assessed and what can change the recommendation.

03

Compare the finished result

Two quotes can use the same window model while including different wall repairs and finishing work. Ask each installer to describe the removal, opening preparation, perimeter connection, insulation, trim and disposal. Compare glass area, operating clearance and access to hardware as well as the product price. For a bedroom, have the actual escape-opening requirements checked independently of the frame choice.

04

Keep changes controlled

Removal can reveal deterioration that a survey could not see. Agree who documents it, what work pauses, how the cost is proposed and who authorizes repairs. Avoid a contract that silently treats every concealed repair as included or every unexpected condition as an unlimited extra. A measured opening schedule and photographs provide a much better basis for agreement.

Questions worth asking

  • Which components stay, and why are they suitable to retain?
  • How will the new sill drain and the perimeter connect to the wall?
  • What glass or clear-opening area is lost?
  • Who authorizes concealed repairs?
