PROBLEMS & REPAIRS

Repair, replace a component or replace the opening?

Let the diagnosis set the size of the job.

Planning illustration; the actual system and wall detail must be assessed onsite.
01

Describe the failure precisely

A damaged screen, worn operator, sticking sash, failed sealed-glass unit and rotted frame do not call for the same remedy. Record the symptoms before requesting a full replacement package. Share photographs and any readable product label so a professional can assess repair feasibility and parts availability.

02

Inspect the surrounding construction

A window that is difficult to operate or repeatedly leaks may need assessment of the opening and adjoining wall, not just new hardware. Ask the professional to explain the observed cause and the limits of the inspection. Replacing glass will not repair deteriorated framing, and new trim should not conceal an unresolved water-entry problem.

03

Compare complete options

If repair is feasible, ask what it addresses, what remains unchanged and what service coverage applies. Compare that with an insert or full-frame proposal that includes the relevant finishing and perimeter work. Consider the remaining condition and intended use of the opening rather than judging solely by the age of the unit.

04

Avoid investigation that creates a larger problem

Do not remove structural components, reach unsafely outside or dismantle glazing to identify a part. Use accessible labels and photographs for the first request. If there is loose glass, falling material or another immediate hazard, keep people away and obtain appropriate urgent professional help; an online planning form is not an emergency service.

Questions worth asking

  • What component or connection is actually failing?
  • Have frame and wall condition been assessed?
  • What does each repair or replacement option resolve?
  • Are parts and service coverage available?
