01

Separate replacement from alteration

Replacing a unit in an existing opening is different from cutting a new opening or enlarging one. A basement project can involve the foundation, window well, drainage and interior work as well as glazing. Describe the intended room use and all proposed changes before requesting a final product size.

02

Check the actual clear opening

If the window is intended to serve a bedroom escape function, nominal product dimensions alone do not settle compliance. Have the operating clear opening, access, window-well arrangement and applicable local requirements reviewed for the exact property. Do not apply an online dimension from another province or assume a large pane automatically meets the need.

03

Coordinate the responsibilities

Establish who handles design, permit applications, structural review, foundation cutting, utility checks, drainage, window installation and finishing. These tasks may involve more than one professional. The opening schedule should match the approved design, and final measurement responsibility should be clear before a non-returnable custom unit is ordered.

04

Use a safe planning brief

Photographs and approximate observations are useful for an initial conversation. Do not remove finishes, excavate, cut concrete or alter structural components to obtain a quote. Share the location of existing wells, grade conditions and any known water-entry history. Ask the project team to explain the survey and approval sequence and how the opening stays secure during work.

Questions worth asking

  • Replacement, enlargement or a new opening?
  • Who confirms actual escape-opening requirements?
  • Who owns design, cutting, drainage and permits?
  • When does the final measurement occur?
